PARENTING TIP
'Lower. The. Standard': How to parent when you're all sick

I don't know about you, but it feels like this year we (as a family) have been sick for an eternity. I can't remember the last time we didn't have a sniffle in the background, a cough keeping us up at night, a runny nose forcing us to reach for a tissue every half hour. It's been relentless.

And what's worse is we haven't really figured out how NOT to spread it. My son gives it to me, I give it to my daughter, my daughter gives it to my partner and my partner gives it back to all of us. It's a vicious cycle.

It's the result of a brutal combination of our son starting at a big daycare and the first year without any real COVID restrictions or mask-wearing.

BREAKING NEWS
Did you know you can get combinations of COVID, flu and RSV at the same time?

This chart shows cases of COVID, RSV and flu in UCHealth hospitals over recent weeks. Note: some patients had more than one virus. Their primary infection is represented here. Image: UCHealth

It’s been a rough winter for respiratory viruses, and some hospitalized patients are testing positive for combinations of COVID-19, flu and RSV at the same time. The symptoms of these dual infections are similar to those that people would have if they had one illness: a bad cough, a fever, aches, exhaustion and difficulty breathing for some.

It’s impossible to say whether people who have double infections of COVID-19 and flu or flu and RSV or RSV and COVID feel twice as lousy.

Here are some self-care tips in case you, too, get sick this season.

Parent Picks

1 Quick Tip

When you're sick, give yourself permission to let go of perfection. It's okay if the house isn't spotless or if dinner is takeout instead of home-cooked. Use this time to teach your children about self-care and setting boundaries. Explain why it's important to rest and recover, showing them that taking care of oneself is a priority. This lesson in self-care and understanding limitations is invaluable, teaching them empathy and self-awareness from a young age.

1 Creative Activity

Create story stones by painting simple images or words on smooth rocks. These can be characters, objects, or settings. Once dry, use them for a storytelling game where each person picks a stone and adds to a collective story based on the image they choose. It's a creative, low-energy activity that stimulates the imagination and can be enjoyed from the comfort of your couch or bed.

1 Useful Product

For any parent, the sound of a struggling breath from a baby can be distressing. That's where the Quiet Portable Nebulizer steps in as an indispensable tool. Designed to be both effective and unobtrusive, this device efficiently delivers medication through a fine mist, making it easier for your little one to breathe without the intimidating noise that comes with traditional nebulizers. Its portability means you can offer relief anytime, anywhere, whether at home or on the go, ensuring your baby's comfort and your peace of mind. THIS has personally saved my life and my baby’s A LOT this winter season
